NIKOLA TESLA STATUE IN NIAGARA FALLS

Posted on June 22nd, 2026. Niagara Falls, Canada

Among the many iconic landmarks you’ll get to see and learn about during one of our Niagara Falls tours, few are as meaningful as the Nikola Tesla Monument.

Overlooking the mighty Horseshoe Falls in Queen Victoria Park, this striking bronze sculpture honors one of the greatest inventors in history and commemorates Niagara Falls’ pivotal role in one of humanity’s most important technological breakthroughs.

WHERE IS THE NIKOLA TESLA MONUMENT LOCATED?

The statue is located in Queen Victoria Park along the scenic Niagara Parkway, just south of the Horseshoe Falls. It’s one of the first stops on the tour.

Address: 6342 Niagara River Pkwy, Niagara Falls, ON L2G 6R5

From this spot, visitors enjoy spectacular views of the waterfall while learning about how Nikola and others harnessed the power of Niagara Falls to generate electricity.

WHEN WAS THE MOMUMENT INSTALLED?

The monument was unveiled on July 9, 2006, marking the 150th anniversary of Nikola Tesla’s birth. The project was spearheaded by the Serbian Orthodox community in Niagara Falls, particularly St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, in partnership with the Niagara Parks Commission.

The sculpture was created by Canadian artist Les Drysdale, whose winning design portrays Tesla standing confidently atop one of his most transformative inventions; an alternating current (AC) motor.

Because of its strategic location, many people take photos of this stop of the tour with the Falls flowing in the background.

WHY WAS THE STATUE BUILT IN NIAGARA FALLS?

Niagara Falls is one of the most significant places in Tesla’s life story.

As a young boy, Tesla saw an illustration of Niagara Falls and reportedly imagined placing a giant wheel beneath the rushing water to harness its immense energy. That childhood dream eventually became reality.

In the 1890s, Tesla’s alternating current system was selected for the world’s first large-scale hydroelectric generating station at Niagara Falls. This groundbreaking project proved that electricity could be transmitted over long distances efficiently and economically.

Without Tesla’s innovations, modern power grids as we know them would not exist.

For history buffs, engineers, and curious travelers, the Nikola Tesla statue is one of the most fascinating and meaningful landmarks in Niagara Falls.

WHO WAS NIKOLA TESLA?

Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) was an inventor, engineer, and visionary best known for developing the alternating current (AC) electrical system that powers most of the world today.

Born in what is now Croatia to Serbian parents, Tesla emigrated to the United States in 1884. He later became a U.S. citizen and worked on inventions ranging from electric motors and radio technology to wireless transmission and remote control.

Although often overshadowed during his lifetime, Tesla is now recognized as one of history’s most influential scientific minds.

Today, Tesla’s innovations are all around us. The unit used to measure magnetic flux density, the tesla (T), is named in his honor.

His work underpins:

  • Household electricity
  • Hydroelectric power generation
  • Electric motors
  • Radio and wireless technology
  • Remote controls
  • Modern industrial systems

Tesla vs. Edison: The “War of Currents”

Tesla is famously linked to the “War of Currents,” a fierce battle between two competing electrical systems.

  • Thomas Edison promoted direct current (DC).
  • Tesla and George Westinghouse championed alternating current (AC).

DC worked over only short distances and required many generating stations. AC could be transmitted over vast distances, making it far more practical.

Niagara Falls became the ultimate proving ground for AC.

When Tesla’s system successfully delivered electricity from Niagara Falls to Buffalo in 1896, the debate was effectively settled. AC became the global standard. The Niagara Falls Power Project

The hydroelectric project at Niagara Falls was among the most ambitious engineering achievements of the 19th century.

The first generating station on the American side began producing electricity in 1895, and by November 1896 power was being transmitted to Buffalo, approximately 35 kilometers away. This demonstrated for the first time that large-scale hydroelectric power could be distributed to distant cities.

This achievement helped launch the electrification of North America and eventually the world.

SYMBOLISM OF THE NIKOLA TESLA STATUE

The Canadian monument is rich in symbolism.

Tesla is depicted as he may have appeared in the mid-1890s, around the time his Niagara dream became reality. He stands atop an AC induction motor, representing the invention that made hydroelectric transmission possible.

The location itself is also symbolic. According to local tradition, it stands near the viewpoint associated with the famous image of the Falls that inspired Tesla as a boy.

A MONUMENT ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BORDER

Tesla is honored with statues on both sides of Niagara Falls.

While our Canadian monument in Queen Victoria Park was unveiled in 2006, the American monument on Goat Island was unveiled in 1976 as a gift from Yugoslavia to the United States.

Together, these monuments underscore Tesla’s global legacy and Niagara Falls’ central role in his story.
