MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT NIAGARA FALLS TOURS
We covered some of the most pressing questions people have about Niagara Falls tours in a previous article but there were many we overlooked!
Below are answers to some of the most common questions people have about Niagara Falls.
CAN NIAGARA FALLS BE TURNED OFF?
Yes. Well, sort of. In 1969, engineers “turned off” the American Falls between June - November 25 using a cofferdam to divert water to the Canadian side so they could investigate and study the underlying rock.
There have also been cases of natural ice dams causing the Falls to slow to a trickle.
IS NIAGARA FALLS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC?
Yes! Niagara Falls is free to access and a great view just feet from the brink of the Falls is available 24/7 along the Niagara Parkway.
IS IT SPELLED “NIAGARA” OR “NIAGRA”?
Niagara (Nigh-a-ger-ah).
This is one of those times where the advice of “sound it out” doesn’t really apply because it does often sound like it should be spelled “Niagra” (Nigh-a-grah).
One of those common misconceptions.
WHAT DOES “NIAGARA” MEAN?
The most popular theory is they “Niagara” comes from the Iroquoian word “Onguiaahra” (which means “the strait”).
Another popular theory is that it’s from another native word that means “thundering waters”.
Either way, like the modern name of many locations in Canada (including “Canada” itself) it’s widely believed to have originated from native language.
ARE DOGS ALLOWED ON NIAGARA FALLS TOURS?
Service animals are allowed by all Niagara Falls attractions available on our tours.
According to Niagara Falls Tourism non service dogs are allowed anywhere within public property, including the Niagara Parkway, as long as they’re well behaved and cleaned up after.
Non service animals are not allowed on most Niagara Falls attractions.
ARE KIDS ALLOWED ON NIAGARA FALLS TOURS?
Yes of course. In fact we have special pricing for children under 13. Kids 2 and under are free!
There are some attractions in Niagara Falls that are not included on our tours such as the Whirlpool Jet Boats, that do have age restrictions so if you’re planning to visit Niagara Falls and explore on your own we recommend checking with each business or attraction you’re planning to take part in.
WHEN IS NIAGARA FALLS OPEN?
Visiting Niagara Falls is free and available 24/7/365.
Attractions have varying hours of operation, but being able to drive or walk along the parkway for a view is always available to the public.
WHY IS NIAGARA FALLS FAMOUS?
It’s consistently listed as a wonder of the world. It’s one of the most visited and photographed places in the world.
If you’re asking why then you likely have not had the chance to stand next to Falls in person.
There are taller water falls in the world, but no waterfall can match the power and intensity of Niagara Falls with over 168,009 cubic meters of water flowing over every minute.
That’s about 1 MILLION bath tubs full of water every 60 seconds.
